Women in Islam

Before Islam the pagan Arabs used to bury their female children alive, make women dance naked in the vicinity of the Kaa’ba during their annual fairs, and treat women as mere chattels and objects of sexual pleasure possessing no rights or position whatsoever.

Before Islam women were treated worse than animals. Prophet Mohammad (saw) wanted to put a stop to all cruelties towards women. He preached kindness towards them. He told Muslims on different occasions: “Fear Allah in respect of women.” And: “The best of you are you are those who are best to their wives.” And: “A Muslim must not hate his wife And:“The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is.”

Prophet Mohammad said - “The world and all things in the world are precious but the most precious thing in the world is a virtuous woman.”

Prophet Mohammad also said - “None honours women except he who is honourable, and none despises them except he who is despicable.”

Islam made women aware of their rights and gave them an identity, a personality, freedom, and independence. These rights, among others, include the right to inherit, to own property, to obtain a divorce, to collect a dowry, and to gain child custody.

It is a fact, however, that sound administration within the domestic field is impossible without a unified policy. For this reason Shari’ah requires a man, as head of the family, to consult with his family and then to have the final say in decisions concerning it. This is not a choice. He has to consult his wife. Any transgression of this principle involves the risk of losing the favour of Allah, because his wife is not his subordinate but she is, to use the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him), “the queen of her house”, and this is the position a true believer is expected to give his wife.

MOTHERS IN ISLAM

Prophet Mohammad said - “Paradise is under the feet of your mother.”

A man came to Prophet Mohammad and said, Who among the people has the biggest right on me. The Prophet said: Your mother. The man said, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your father.

According to a hadith Prophet Mohammad stopped a man from going for Jihad because his mother was old. He told him to serve her instead.

As mother, desperately looking for water for her child, Hajira ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times. Finally, she saw that a water stream had started at the feet of Ismael. This miraculous steam is still running on beside the Kaaba, and it is known as Zamzam.

Allah loved the spirit of motherhood demonstrated by Hajira - who ran seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water for her child that he has commanded the Muslim pilgrims to run between the hills of Safa and Marwah when they go for pilgrimage.

The ritual of running between the two hills of Safa and Marwah seven times is an essential part of pilgrimage and it brings the memory of Hajira as a mother.
