Video: This Is What Traffic Police in Karachi Really Does

Traffic Police in Karachi is infamous for its notorious activities, harrasing motorcyclists, rickshawas, buses and goods carriers and extorting money out of them. Instead of controlling traffic and helping out in case of accidents, Traffic Police Wallas, locally known as Tullas, setup traps at busy traffic signals, under flyovers and near the roundabouts, catching bikewalas like pack of hyenas.

Following video is from a GEO program, recorded near Tibet Center, famous for the auto-parts markets and repair shops on the busiest M.A Jinnah Road, in the viccinity of Preedy Police Station. The video was made before there was a ban on pillion riding. It shows the real character of Traffic Police in Karachi.

Another example of Karachi Traffic Police’s activities is here.

This will happen to continue until people of karachi are not included in Police.
All these Policemen transfers themselves to karachi to do such things, they do not belong from karachi nor they want a prosper karachi.

Sindh Police do have Karachities in it (although in very small numbers but still in presence), what good they are to Karachi?

Also, what the Community Police is doing? There is no other example of such a forece in any other city of Pakistan. It comprises of Urdu speaking indviduals, mostly with political affiliations. They have got brand new vehicles, better than the Sindh Police, uniforms and what nots. But what exactly are they doing in /for Karachi? If they are here to keep peace, where they were when 50 people died in Karachi, few months back.

so you are itched by the fact that urdu speaks got gov jobs mr kashif aziz ?
City Police is now turned into city wardens and they are not responsible for maintaining law and order in the city, nor they carry weapons, they are to check illegal road cutting, facilitates people in road crossing and to assist traffic police in traffic control and that is the reason why no major traffic jam in ramadan in last 2 years.

@Khaled: I have certainly no issues with Urdu speaking population getting jobs. My point is that what is the exact role of Community Police / City wardens?

    • Traffic Control: You said there was no major traffic jam in last 2 years. Well, there maybe none 2 years back, but last year was really chaotic. Check old papers to keep the record straight. Also, we see daily traffic jams in Karachi. What the “wardens” are doing now? Or, are they for Ramadans only?

    • Facilitate people in road crossing: Whats the use of traffic signals, zebra crossing and pedestarian bridges? when we need lots (read hundreds) of traffic wardesn to help people cross roads.

I wonder why they need so many brand new vehicles if they dont need to patrol streets to help maintain law and order? It would be better if those vehicles would have been dontated to Sindh Police, who is doing the law n order work.

I can quote examples of street crimes happening in front of these “wardens” and they watching it from the comfort of their “mobiles”. One can see them going around picking motorcycles and later asking for fines and extortion money. Why do they pick bikes like that?

If community police is only to help people cross roads and control traffic (which they obviously don’t), the people do not need them.

I have used bike for almost 2 years. I was only fined twice during this time. once for not wearing helmet and 2nd time for driving in wrong direction. The money these police constables extort is lot less than what you pay as fine and everybody knows where fine is used. Policemen have a very tough job facing criminals all the time. I firmly believe if we follow traffic laws, no cop no matter how corrupt will not be able to extort money out of you(motor bike rider as well as transporter).

Secondly, please avoid this discrimination based on provinces. We should calls ourselves as Pakistanis. The recent event in Lahore won’t be remembered as Lahore carnage rather as Pakistan carnage. United we have better chance in retaliating terrorists other problems. Pakistan was formed in the name of Islam and even right now Islam is the majority religion in all provinces of Pakistan so we can and should use provincial identity as a positive thing instead of negative.
