Two Signs

Lu Hoi Son was a Chinese writer, journalist and a teacher. He is best remembered as a story writer.

George Barnard Shaw came to Shanghai in 1934 and stayed in Susan — the best hotel of that time. The hotel was owned by a rich Jew. Lu Hoi Son came to call on Shaw but he was stopped at the door. When the writer asked why, the janitor pointed to a plaque that read, “Dogs and Chinese are not allowed.” Stunned! Lu Hoi Son was Chinese belonging to a lower social class. George Barnard Shaw came out of the hotel to see the writer when he learnt about the arrival.

The remains of the Hotel Susan are still there in Shanghai; dilapidated. On the other hand, the home of Lu Hoi Son has been converted into a national monument and museum displaying different aspects of writer’s life. Every thing from his shoes to reading glasses is preserved there and the visitors to the monument draw strength and inspiration from there. He was called Gorky of China.
