So many businesses are busy running their businesses and don’t have a clue how to interact with the web today. Until the arrival of Social Media Optimization, this was becoming an increasingly painful experience for the top management of business, who are web-enabled.

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is all about the integration of community with business. In essence, as the Web 2.0 is touting the supermacy of community and more and more infusion of populace in web, SMO is the business’s answer to this growing question mark.

It is basically a bridge between how a company sees its customer in regard of its products and how a customer thinks about the products. All these social networks, RSS feeds, blogs , YouTube videos, when get integrated in sites, it is called as SMO.

Rohit Bhargava was the man behind the term SMO, he drew five rules for SMO,

Increase your linkability
Make tagging and bookmarking easy
Reward inbound links
Help your content travel
Encourage the mashup

Ever since, people are adding more and more rules in the list, but the idea remains the same. “By the people, For the people”.
