School in Karachi turned into Police Station

Amidst all governmental hype about giving priority to education, ground realities are quite harsh. Daily Jang published report of a school in Karachi that has been turned into a Police Station and Traffic Police Post.

School turned into Police Station

Allama Iqbal Government Boys Secondary School is situated at Federal-B-Area, Block 16, Karachi. This area is also known as Yousuf Plaza. There are 6 schools going in this premises including, Allama Iqbal Government Boys Secondary School (Morning), Allama Iqbal Girls Secondary School (Afternoon), Kamyab Boys Secondary School, Full Bright Primary School, Allama Iqbal Primary School Number 1 and Allama Iqbal Primary School Number 2 (Afternoon). The AEDO (Additional District Officer Education) office is also established here.

Three years ago 400 teachers and 1,500 students used to come here but then CDGK constructed a service road within school’s boundary as diversion for then under-construction Sohrab Goth Flyover. Afterwards, school’s ground was used to store construction machinery and other heavy equipment.

Four months back Police Station Yousuf Plaza is constructed inside School Building and a Traffic Police Post is also established. According to a teacher, school enrollment is so much effected that some of the schools running here have less than 20 students now. Frequent screams of people tortured by Police interrogation and presence of odd-looking individuals around the premises is discouraging students, especially girls, to come to school.

Now, when this will be raised in front of Nazim Karachi, he will held provincial government responsible for this who then put the blame on federal government who in turn tell the world that Taliban and Al-Qaeda are behind this. The truth is that due to negligence of all authorities, a school, once thriving, is now as dead as our collective conscience.
