Pervez Musharraf’s Resignation and The Way Forward

In a television address President Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation on Monday. He said, he resigned after being nine years in power in order to avoid the impeachment’s threat. General retired Musharraf made this announcement after denouncing and denying the impeachment charges made against him. He said, “After viewing the situation and consulting legal advisers and political allies, with their advice I have decided to resign.”

After his announcement celebrations across the country were seen. Political parties are terming it as a historical moment in Pakistan’s history. But despite all the celebrations at different locations, the elected political parties must not forget that the ball is in their court now. The promises they had had made during the election campaigns must be fulfilled now as the last hurdle in their course is not persisting any more. The restoration of judiciary to 2nd November position within seventy two hours, promised would be their first test. The pressure has already mounted on the government. It is obligatory that the government must not repeat the mistakes made by the previous government.

The new path to democracy would be abolishment of 58-2b by the newly elected President. The count down has begun.
