Pakistan announces Pro-Indian Trade Policy
While India continues with open atrocities in Occupied Kashmir and clandestine sabotage activities in and across Afghan border, we are returning fire with flowers. Most recent example of our over-eager approach to mend fences, and help India expand its commerce reach, is our Trade Policy 2008-2009.
Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, The Defence Minister cum Commerce Minister, while unveiling the Trade Policy for 2008-09 announced a unilateral expansion of the positive list of tradable items from India without any reciprocity from India on the cards.
The commerce minister defended his pro-India import policy by insisting that ‘India is our neighbour and we are gradually liberalising our bilateral trade’.
Also allowed are imports of duty free CNG Buses, diesel and fuel oil from India.
Instead of utilizing commerce ministry officials, the Trade Policy is drafted with the help of officials from Pakistani embassies in various countries.
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that trade policy has been leaked to a Karachi-based car manufacturing company.

Whilst I have no opposition to a pro-India trade policy, I think the Defence-cum-commerce minister Chaudhry Mukhtar rather ironically represents the trade interests of the Military inc.
After all when the Pakistan Army is not conquering its own country (at the behest of America or at its own initiative), it is merely functioning as the security arm of the commercial Fauji Foundation.
Just like Chaudhry Mukhtar the businessman, the marauding and oppressive Generals of the Pakistan Army too would be more than willing to become pro-India for a few pennies.
After all, Chaudhry Mukhtar or no Chaudhry Mukhtar the Defence ministry for a long time has only been a corrupt extension of the Commerce ministry.
Chaudhry Mukhtar aptly symbolises this relationship.

I don’t see what’s wrong in importing goods from India. Drugs and medicines made in India are three times cheaper than the ones manufactured in Pakistan.
