Obsession with Cell Phones
People buy cell phones depending on the latest model, features and make sure that it looks “cool.” Latest models haunt teenagers and the amount of money spent on cell phones is staggering. It is not surprising that the latest model does not stay “latest” for long. It is more of an accessory to be shown off than anything else.
Cell phones can be seen everywhere now. In cars, buses, elevators, restaurants, cinema halls and even mosques. It is surprising that people fell the need to talk all the time. While cell phones have proven to be handy, such as in cases of emergency where people were able to call for help, most of the time cell phones are used without purpose and have even proven fatal, such as in cases of car accidents where the driver was using a cell phone.
One craze that has risen is that of texting. Some people send hundreds of text messages every day. People send text messages everywhere, even in class during lessons. It has become such a nuisance for teachers that cell phones have been banned in many western schools. Another problem that has risen is the sending of sexually explicit messages. They have become so common that it has been labeled sexting.
Cell phone companies advertise ruthlessly, and offer not only the latest models and designs but also schemes that are questionable. In western countries they offer porn on cell phones. In the subcontinent late night packages are common. From late night packages in the east to porn in the west, cell phones have become a device to lure people into spending as much money as they possibly can.
I am not going to say that we should do away with cell phones altogether, although that would certainly solve the problem for those girls who are harassed. What I would say is that cell phones shoule be used with a purpose. Not for spending staggering amounts of money on latest models, not for sexting, not for endless texting, and certainly not for using it at the cost of missing sleep, such as the case with late night packages.
