So the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) beneficiaries list comes out. The media is happy that those persons who enjoyed taking advantage of the NRO have light casted upon them, while the government is trying to push forward the argument of how they have respected the Supreme Court’s judgment and have publicized the list. It seems to be a win-win situation for all parties. But is it really? Calls for the resignation of ministries and portfolios have echoed from all corners. How has this zero-sum game turned into a finger-pointing-name-calling battle?

Pakistan as a nation is a peace loving country. The terrorist activities in the country do not help portray that image in the global circuit. However, the political issue regarding the list of NRO beneficiaries being highlighted does not help the cause either. What the media can do is help the country by reporting in an optimistic manner on how good we are and how effectively we are fighting terrorism, because that is the real issue at hand.

It is time to get deviated from the issues such as NROs. It’s a live wire but citizens believe that there are much more important issues to be addressed. The media should take sole responsibility and give maximum space to tolerant and positive messages. The majority os Pakistanis are peace loving. With this action of media the terror elements can be decreased as media I believe has the power to induce even a suicide bombers mind if they are showing the rite thing.

@ skunk: whether it was a Sindhi or a Punjabi, it doesn't matter. Those who looted the country will have to pay for it sooner or later. In any other country, Zardari or Gilani or other looters (who benefited from NRO) would not have been allowed to contest elections.

@ mr abbasi, you fail to see the point I was trying to make, your proposition about taking a poll on this web site will not reflect the true picture of Pakistani public, the opinions would be of the educated middle class at best. The 'masses' who dwell out side the cities do not agree with your opinions I gave references of recent Gallup surveys for the same reason.

The theory of worst democracy is better than dictatorship stands true as always. Should not the fact that NRO was withdrawn when it could easily have been repromulgated by the president be an eye opener?

ps. Alas yes the bench has restarted hearings for the missing persons. It was indeed quite a sight when we all discovered on the 3rd of November that missing persons were still missing. Not a single hearing was held or a case pursued between 16th of March and 3rd November 2009- me wonders why?!
