Mother Teresa

Roman Catholic nun and missionary, born in 1910 at a place, what is now Macedonia of Albanian parentage. In 1928 she went to India, where she devoted herself to helping the destitute. In 1948 she became an Indian citizen and founded the Order of Missionaries of Charity, which became noted for its work among the poor and the dying in Calcutta. Her organization now operates in many other parts of the world. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

“The other day I dreamed that I was at the gates of heaven….And St. Peter said, ‘Go back to Earth, there are no slums up here.’ “

These words, once spoken by Mother Teresa, vividly recall the life of the late Roman Catholic nun and missionary known as “the Saint of the Gutters.”
