Minding one’s own business

I think people in developing countries would probably need to consult a dictionary if told not to ask personal questions. People are in the habit of ‘interviewing’ others even when it is the first time they meet. Things like “what do you do” and “how old are you” seem to be the most common. If I know someone who happens to be a friend or someone I have known for sometime then it doesn’t matter that much, but what is most annoying is people who meet you for the first time and start with their questions and you have to tell them right away that it is none of their business or just ignore them.

You can bet when I do it, it’s not polite. I don’t think a person should be polite when telling someone that the question(s) they are asking is none of their business. Be rude. Only then will they get it. I think that people in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will probably end up with indigestion if you don’t tell them what you do and how old you are. This is, if they are polite! Otherwise, you have to tell them your marital status, how many kids you have, what your father does and the list goes on and on, and this is when you meet someone for the first time!

I think the West has it sorted out perfectly and in this matter we can learn from them. In my entire life in the West, not a single person asked me a single personal question, except for the odd immigrant of course, the idiot who couldn’t help asking things that were none of his concerns. Even in the mosque, there are people who you don’t know and they start asking you personal questions. Pathetic morons.
