KESC has now become Karachi Enigma Supply Corporation as the summer, load shedding and Karachi has now synonymous. The mystery of this department still unsolved. It seems that Karachi could never have an uninterrupted power supply for 24 hours. The largest revenue generating city of Pakistan had to suffer 8 to 10 hours of power cut daily in summers. The situation has become so vulnerable that people had to protest at KESC centers in Malir, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Surjani, Kemari, Sultanabad, Korangi, as reported by Dawn.

The role of KESC officials has long been criticized but all efforts ended in a smoke. As a matter of fact the customer service of KESC needs a lot of improvement, as the reports of unattended faults are there. There is a short fall of around 450 mega watts.

Almost all areas of the city are being affected but still no progress made in this regard. Even there is no Public announcement for the load shedding hours, only the short fall is mentioned in press releases. PEPCO is urging people to save electricity in advertisements on media by giving advises but not ready to take action and remove public distress. They can not hide their incompetence by blaming public for wasting electricity.

This situation is beneficial for generator and UPS industry for sure. People are forced to buy these items and spend their savings to have at least a sound sleep after a long tiring day at work. Economic activity is grinding to a halt on account of the load-shedding. The promises made by Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to make further investments to infrastructure seem a far cry. Icing on the cake is the proposed new high tariffs for Karachi despite of the fact that public of Karachi was paying the highest tariff as compared to other cities. Due to power failure water supply to the city had been badly affected.

There should be a section in the bill called “Load Shedding Fine” for KESC. The section should be filled by people and fine could be fixed on hour basis. This will be relief for people as they can give their aggression a way. Load shedding hours will be reduced as a result of this fine.

It is the need of time that concerned authorities look into the matter before the protest enlarges. KESC should publicize their complaint center numbers and locations for instant access and assure that they will respond promptly. Government also ensure power generation plants swiftly work and build new dams as hydro electric power is cheaper.
