Meetings
YouGov, the polling company, carried out a survey of 1,200 businesses in the UK and reports that unnecessary face-to-face meetings cost UK businesses £17 billion annually. The survey was carried out on behalf of Polycom, a video and phone conferencing company, so the objectives are pretty much obvious.
I’m still grappling with how I can change my working practices to become more efficient and focus more on productive and technical work and less on meetings. I think the answer lies in making my communications outside meetings more effective and fruitful and not-so-boring and not-so-intimidating.
Meetings have become so infamous, people no longer take them seriously and poke fun at the mercilessly. I really do think that meetings are the perfect way for physical contact while discussing critical issues. True most of the meetings are boring, dry, outright useless and right out from hell, but this isn’t the fault of the meetings, its the fault of not carrying them out properly. Meetings should only be conducted on very crucial moments, with as less people as possible and they should be focussed, short and to the point.
