Makro Karachi Selling Dead Fish
Makro is a Dutch-German chain of Warehouse clubs, also called cash and carries. It opened its first branch in Amesterdam in 1968 and since then Makro has spread across Europe, Asia and Africa.
In Pakistan, Makro has arrived in collaboration with the Habib Group. However, the local version of Makro has got the desi touch, aka bad customer service and lack of quality.
I have recently visited Makro branch located at Mangophir Road, SITE. While the official timings are 9am till midnight, I found the place deserted and lacking staff at around 9.30 in the morning. The cleaning process was still going on, items like fish and chicken were not priced yet and the mutton was from previous day.
There was an aquarium placed in the Fish section, labelled “Alive Fish”. The idea apparently was to offer “live fish” to the customers, something that we routinely see in other countries. However, the tank contained at least 5 “dead fish”, expired hours ago from the look of their carcasses and contaminating the tank.

Makro — Everything For Everyone! Yeah, right. And, not to mention I hate the way they go through the stuff in your trolleys once you check out and exit. Seems they are sniffing you for stolen stuff.

Thats strange………….I have seen the alive fish section in Star Gate branch of makro many times but didn’t experience what u have seen.
They are involved in sugar hoarding also as they sell it with a separate bill and when you are exiting they will snatch the bill of sugar from you saying that we are not allowed to let the customer go with the sugar bill. The simple reason being high price and hoarding.
I agree the way they check your trolley on exit point is pathetic.

The Supreme Court has ordered that their Lines Area branch be demolished, since it was built on a playground for children of the area.

I totally disagree with what above is said. Makro atleast give us what we are getting outside the country. It is a pioneer of retail business in Pakistan. 1000 employees are working in retail environment and learning about standards. In Malaysia, after 18 years, they start to perform standards in a rite manner where as in Pakistan they are just 3 years old. Makro give us every thing under one roof, provide parking area which in karachi is big issue. Prices are not bad at all when i compare them with these facilities plus assortments are good. So my friend, see only one side of picture will not give you a solution. Rest they are checking trollies not only in Pakistan but where ever their branches in whole world they do exactly same. I hope that they will improve their performance and standard time to time.

Yeah, rite, they are not that bad plus Saddar store should not be closed. We shop their every month and its a matter of 250 employees and their families who will suffer after closing saddar center.

@Lakhani and @Imran: From the way you are defending them, I guess you are associated with Makro. FYI:
