Release Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

Karachi, City of Dust and Chaos

Karachi, inhabitated by approximately 18 million people, is seriously threatened by the construction work going around. As the city has been dugged from end to end, and diversions are scarce, one has to pass through at least one development site, increasing the risks of getting affected eye, nose and throat infections as well as breathing related diseases like ashtma.

Construction of roads and highways are always undertaken keeping public safety and security in mind. Unfortunately, in Karachi it seems that the City District Government (CDGK) is only concerned about meeting its deadline and does not give a damn about suffering of the citizens.

You are so right. A friend of mine recently returned from the US of A, and his reaction after driving around for a couple of days in the city was, “it seems as if the americans have been bombing this place and not baghdad”….

Everything is a mess. I have the misfortune to travel to work from KDA-1 to SITE area, and the road has been DESTROYED in atleast five different locations. Karsaz, Hassan Square Gharibabd, Liaqatabad, Nazimabad. The CDGK had the bright idea of simaltaneosly starting work on all these huge and overly ambitious projects, which we will only appreciate when the work is complete (whenever that might be).

Its just that the project management of the CGDK is atrocious, and that they have not deputed people within the CDGK to monitor the work progress of the contractors. For the first few months of this construction, none of the alternative routes were properly established, resulting the commuter to be stuck in 2 hour traffic jams daily. As if your boss didnt piss you off enought at work, that we needed the CDGK to do it for us before we even get there.

The underpasses were supposed to be completed by July but now it’s said that they would be finished in Oct-Nov. More misery for Karachites in days to come.
