India Wins Asia Cup Thriller Against Pakistan

The much anticipated India-Pakistan match came to an end with India emerging victorious. Both teams played well but India handled the pressure better. The match was tense and a nail-biter. A lot of people will not need a nail cutter for some time now. An India-Pakistan match is always full of excitement. Even the “boring patches” are viewed by people of both nations.
Pakistan’s fielding was horrible. Simple run-out chances were missed and fumbles were made in the field. Add to that, wides were given in the final overs. Most misfields, run-out chances and wides came during the final overs, when it was crucial to keep the momentum going, and that resulted in the pressure being lifted of India.
During India’s innings it was surprising to see Sehwag off-color. However, Gambhir, Dhoni and Raina played extremely well. However, the last powerplay that was taken was in my opinion, too late. One thing that is to be noticed is that Indian bowlers have started to prove that they can bat as well. At the same time, I’m surprised that Tendulkar is being “rested” and Yuvraj Singh has been dropped.
The thing about India is that it plays as a team when they are performing against Pakistan. The unity is there. That is why they are at their best against Pakistan. India’s individual records are great, but they usually fail to perform as a team. However, when they play against Pakistan they play as a team, which is why they win.
I wanted to see Shoaib Akhtar in action. However, he was hammered throughout the field and went wicketless. Shoaib Malik made a come back as well, missing a simple run-out that would have handed Pakistan the match. Maybe he was busy thinking about Sania Mirza. Oh, well…
Well, at the end, I hope no one broke their TV set, no one became ill, no one had a heart attack and no one shot himself.

Hi Yusha
“A lot of people will not need a nail cutter for some time now.” …well said.
At some points during the match I was thinking of how boring even Indo-Pak 50-over matches have become. I was also reading Harsha Bhogle’s article on what can be done to make ODIs interesting.

However, a couple of the skirmishes between the players and the close finish has re-installed my faith in Indo-Pak matches (provided they are managed properly). It is highly important that these 2 teams do not over-play each other.
I suppose Siddarth Ravindran best sums it up as India and Pakistan played out a bare-knuckle brawl that had all the intensity of the more famous matches of the illustrious rivalry. All that was lacking was a capacity crowd to witness it

Tendulkar they are giving rest is because we want him in World cup. As age is not on his side he will not play more matches. Yuvraj is not in his touch and many things are going around him so he has been given some time to relax. I guess both will return soon. Afridi is playing well now, i guess Razzak must have given some more overs to bowl.

Well, it was good match, and Australia will be alarmed by this intensity of Performance. More elements for improvement has been highlighted, such as fielding, and best utilization of Bowlers.
Shoaib Akhtar seems laking match practice, Umar Amin and Shahzaib if drop today for England tour, it will be harsh for the both.
One more thing is that One express fast bowler still needed to replace Shoaib AKhtar on his retirement….
I think Waqar Younis, Waseem and other bowling coaches in Pakistan should look into it as wel. because after one or two year, we can b one fast bowler down…

@Maddie: I feel that the lack of crowd may have been due to lack of publicity about the tournament. Also, it is not strictly an India-Pakistan series, which may have also prompted people to avoid seeing the match. Another factor, as you correctly suggested, may have been because India-Pakistan have overplayed each other, which has reduced interest.
I personally would not like to see any more changes to the one day game. It has been ruined enough with an extra powerplay, mis-hit rule and other changes where even a total of 400 does not seem enough, and records are being broken like their is no tomorrow. It is unfair to those who made records when changes had not been made to the one day format.
@Abhishek: Thanks for the info. Yuvraj may be out of form, but it is never a good idea to drop a player of such calibre. A lot of people have expressed surprise over his exclusion. As for Tendulkar being rested, I think it is a good idea.
@Mansoor: Thanks for your comment.

Hi Yusha.. No body noticed how Abdul Razaq is being used by Afridi. His performance for five overs was enough to give hime few more overs. Besides he is given batting at lower order where afridi used to go and he protested that i am under utilized here. I am sure people will agree at least Razaq has more batting ability and capacity than afridi. One can see perofrmance of Abdul Razaq in Lahore Badshahs in IPL .

Hi, Ahmed. There are many bowlers who bowl well during the beginning or middle overs and then get hammered in the final overs. As far as batting is concerned, Shahid Afridi proved with his century against Sri Lanka (and Bangladesh) that is the best. In the past Abdur Razzak has been promoted where he did not score runs. Also, ODI cricket is a totally different ball game than IPL.

Hi Yusha… My view is that Abdul Razak is kept intetionally out of cricket his ODI career is also good. He must be given a chance to make a come back. About Afrid just wait for a test series he has lot to prove. Afrid cant play on seeming wickets and on fast track. A bouncer or a yorker is enough to end his innings. Abdul razak can score and stay on wicket as well. Just wait for a test series where this new formation of pakistani team will be tested .Thanks for commenting Yusha …
