How Citizen Journalism and Social Media covered Pakistan Long March

The Long March is officially over now and Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry will be restored on March 21 as Chief Justice of Pakistan. These amateur journalists followed the events with detail, providing comments and analysis that MSM lack.

During the days of Long March, Bloggers, Citizen Journalists and Social Media enthusiasts tirelessly covered the proceedings, mostly live from the ground.

At Chowrangi we had Live Coverage of Long March, aggregating various sources including Twitter, Blogs and Main Stream Media.

Extensive social media coverage of the Long March was provided, amongst others, by:

  • @awaisnaseer, especially his on-ground coverage of Long March in Rawalpindi / Islamabad, and images of the event on his blog.
  • @LongMarch09, aggregating Long March Coverage on Twitter.
  • @DrAwab, his tweets as well as Live Coverage on his blog.

Twitter was primarily used for information dissemination, using hashtags #LongMarch09 and #LongMarch, which eventually made to top trends of Twitter.

Trailing Long March, there were moments of cynicism, humor and sometimes, rage. Like,

Murder Victims, Corpses, Dead Bodies Required in Lahore

So what inspired you during the Long March? What was your biggest turn on and what made you go insane? Are you satisfied with performance of Social Media during Long March? Please share.

What inspired me most was the physical, intellectual and/or emotional involvement of the common man in the whole issue. The reason why the lawyer’s movement attracted such wide popularity unprecedented for a lawyers’ struggle in Asia at least, was the indifference to personal gains by the protagonists. Everybody knows that CJ restoration will not translate into justice for the millions of cases involving civilians across the country, but still the people supported the movement despite skeptics trying their best to throw dirt on both the movement and Iftikhar Chaudhry.
Yes I believe the social media played an immense (and again a previously unprecedented) and highly laudable role in the whole issue. Both the civil society and the social media should keep acting out their responsibility of playing an active and constructive role in the affairs of Pakistan.
