Chief vs Chief
Political situation of Pakistan is getting worse by the day since sacking of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. Intentionally or unintentionally, Persident Musharraf is guided towards catastrophic path of confrontation and it seems that the battle between Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Judiciary (Supreme Court) has reached to a point of no return.
For the first time in history of Pakistan, a nation wide protest is on the rise without any political party in the lead. It is first time in history of Pakistan, since Pakistan movement led by Barrister Mohammed Ali Jinnah, that a member of judiciary is leading a protest followed by 95% of the law makers of Pakistan.
What is going to happen next? Where this instability will lead to? Whether the decision from Supreme Judicial Council will come in favour of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, or against him? These questions are echoing through the media and every analyst and “expert” has his/her opinion of the situation. However, on one thing everybody agrees, that is, the situation is very grave and it will result in an unexpected change [may be for the betterment of democracy in Pakistan].
In Sunday’s episode of Dr. Shahid Masood’s ‘Mairay Mutabiq’, General (Retd.) Aslam Baig hinted about a consultation process going on that will lead to some sort of negotiations between the two parties. He said that the CJP may resign from his position provided General Musharraf steps down from his throne. He also said that in case the General refused to accept stalemate, only option he would have is to impose emergency which, in General Baig’s terms, won’t be acceptable by the masses. BBC has quoted Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz that option of imposing emergency is available in the constitution and the decision will depend on the situation.
So what Musharraf will do? Couple of predictions are that he will be paying a visit to United States as early as possible and he will be delivering the ultimate gift to his mentors; Osama Bin Laden or Ayman al-Zawahiri!
So far it seems that, for better or worse, Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry has became a catalyst for regime change in Pakistan.

There can be some other options for Mr. President…Dont you think that he can accept that he was wrongly advised and reinstate CJ if it is not too late. Or he can declare a state of emergency. And most probably he can reach out to PPP…

@Saira: Actually he fears that CJ will oppose his re-election from existing Parliament. That’s why he pushed reference against him. So, it seems a bit difficult for him to accept his blunder and reinstate CJ.
Muslim League (Q) may not accept Musharraf’s deal with PPP as it will reduce their importance, especially in Punjab. They will try their best to ward off the deal. 12th May’s rally in Islamabad is a part of it. Also, Benazir will take this as last resort because it will severely damage her political career.
Only option left is of imposing emergency but I think it will be opposed by the Army itself due to fear of public reaction and western sanctions. USA and other western countries may impose sanctions on Pakistan in case emergency is declared here.
