Billy Market
Even if you don’t blow the things out of proportions, and portray the true picture of the things, you don’t seem much around to get jubilant.
If you read the newspapers published in the land of our godfathers, you would come to know how people there are calling us puppet state on the verge of collapse, and their supposed need to come and secure us from our own hands.
Domestically, things are going nowhere but to towards more misery and chaos. Look at the frantic mobs of poor and middle class people, frantically searching for flour, and if some lucky ones find it somewhere, it remains normally out of their meager reach due to exorbitant prices.
I never saw load shedding in winter, but 2007’s winter has broken that record. Now, power remains elusive in the cold days and chilling nights, adding more darkness to the already blackened spirit.
Oil and food is scarce. Poverty is eating the bones. Utility bill have gone out of reach to be paid, though utilities are themselves in shambles. Price hike is sucking the blood. Hoarding is once again there to make the Eid-ul-Azha more religiously fervent. Hoarders always add their bit to make matters more sacrificial.
From the last 60 years, we are in continuous state of ‘Eid-e-Qurban’, as common people are daily sacrifice for the benefits of the elites. Billy Market is what our society is. The healthier a billy is, the more prices he gets. Market is always on for them. He-goats of opposition are ready to be sacrificed on 8th January, while the he-goats of media and judges have already been sacrificed. Only lawyers, some elements of civil society and Imran Khan are left behind, but then they have to save something to make the sacrifices worthwhile.
People of world are amazed at the rampant chaos and apathy running high in the country, but we are in slumber, and our rulers are getting richer.

I have seen Pakistan facing similar conditions in the past. Ayub Khan was overthrown when sugar disappeared from the market. Bhutto was removed when he became too arrogant. In those days, the opposition was united and we had good leaders. Karachi was in the forefront, because its citizens were always politically concious. Unfortunately the MQM, which is the major political party in Karachi, is on the side of the rulers, and unless the people of Karachi come out on the streets in protest, it is impossible to do anything about the situation.
