Are Indian cricketers selfish?

I have always admired Sachin Tendukar, but one thing I have noticed with him, and other Indian batsmen, is that whenever they are about to approach a hundred they slow down. Even if it may be a crucial part of the game or even if they may be playing part time bowlers. It seems as though they forget they are playing for a team. The individual records of Indian batsmen are fabulous but as a team they fail to perform. Is it all due to selfishness?

I saw Nayan Mongia run-out Mohammad Azharuddin back when they used to play, leaving him stranded at the other end. Indians were in a good position against South Africa at the moment and lost it from there on. Nayan Mongia himself got out a few balls later. Azharuddin was on 60 at that time. The incident was the height of selfishness. The poor guy ran Mohammad Azharuddin out again and was handed a two match ban.

Other teams’ batsmen speed up when they are approaching a hundred. What matters is that the team wins. No team apart from India has such fabulous one-day averages and yet India is the only side that never performs as a team. Indian’s net run rate is always negative, they always seem to be playing a match to stay alive in a tournament, and even until today they rely on Sachin Tendulkar.
